Different Types of Landscape Edging

Why Have a Landscape Edge?

Having an edge on your landscape bed separates materials and keeps your outdoor space organized. The proper edging material can help you to achieve a well kept look. It also helps prevent unwanted weeds or grass from creeping into your landscape bed. There are a variety of options with different aesthetics, cost, and upkeep. Below, we will discuss some of the different Landscape Edge Ideas.

Natural/Trench Edging

Trench Edging, entails cutting a crisp edge around the edge of the existing lawn where it meets the garden or landscape bed. This is generally done with a spade shovel, square shovel, or edging machines. It’s best to dig this a few inches below the grass line to create a natural edge and stop material spillover. Trench edging is the most cost effective and most natural type of landscape edge. However, it is important to note that this type of edging requires the most upkeep. Generally redone each year.

Paver or Stone Edging

Stone Paver Edging is great for adding a more decorative look. Stone Pavers can be laid flush to the grass line or raised above the existing grass to create an elevated divide. Paver or Brick Edging is great for preventing grass from growing inside landscape beds. It is also great for being durable and requiring minimal maintenance. This is more costly, but can be a wonderful option to improve your outdoor living space.

Raised Stone Border

Raised Stone Borders really make your yard “pop”. The look being achieved, is that your plantings and landscape bed is raised up to the height of the stone border. If you really want to stand out from the neighbors we recommend having a minimum 2 course stone border installed. These types of landscape edging tend to be the most decorative and awesome for sloped landscapes. They are also the most effective for preventing unwanted grass growth. However, they are a more costly option for Landscape Edging.
